Fish Gigging Tournament
for Wounded Warriors

News > 2012

Take of Soldier Fishing logoMan holding a bass with his fishing poleWe have heard of some fun fishing tournaments in Florida, this one sounds like it will be a blast! Imagine dozens of boats heading out in the night, spears in hand, lights blazing in the water, all on a hunt to catch the most fish. The Calusa Indians hunted fish this way, they did it with hand carved spears or two wooden pronged gigs but they only had dugout canoes, no motors to get them around and no lights.

These brave warriors will have a chance to experience a fun way to "Go Fishing" and we hope you join our Veterans on this great event.

Join the Fun!

Come on down to Lake O for an evening of fun and help support our Veterans. Imagine dozens of boats heading out in the night, spears in hand, lights blazing in the water, all on a hunt to catch the most fish.

"This is a trash fish gigging event to help clean out Lake Okeechobee of non-native fish that harm our lakes and the fish we want to catch. So in three ways we are doing a great cause, letting our soldiers and veterans have fun with each other, helping protect our environment, and raising money for 2 military veteran wounded warrior agencies. No native fish will be taken on this event. We are now adding the biggest bull frog catch to this in which all bull frogs will be eaten. Also the trash fish are going to alligator farms and local zoo's for food so none are being thrown in the trash or back into the lake."
